The theme of desert in literature is a very signif

The theme of desert in literature is a very significant aspect which is a perfect metaphor for self-discovery, difficulties and personal growth. The works of Paulo Coelho in “The Alchemist” and Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince”  outline the encounters of Prince and  Santiago, the protagonists of the novels. The theme of the desert in these works has also helped me better understand the self by articulating the journey of self-discovery, fulfilment and the world. It may be through the literal confrontation of sorrowful landscapes or metaphorically travelling and battling through life’s battles, but the desert is a perfect metaphor for the power of the human spirit, toughness, flexibility and transformation.

The desert in Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist” symbolises the difficulties and transformative journey to accomplish his personal legend. His journey across the Sahara is a metaphorical landscape filled with challenges and high hurdles while chasing his dreams. The unfavourable desert conditions and real-life challenges made Santiago learn a life principle; he understood how everything in the world is connected. He said, “If what one finds is made of pure matter, it will never spoil. If what you had found was only a moment of light, like the explosion of a star, you would find nothing on your return.” This made him grow spiritually and personally, making the journey important in pursuit of a higher purpose. He uses the desert’s symbolism to depict a message about resilience and perseverance.

The desert in “The Little Prince” is a symbol of the Prince’s journey of self-discovery.  Antoine de Saint-Exupery shows the desert metaphorically as human experiences in deserted landscapes. The Little Prince faces a lot of complex situations in an isolated place, which are crucial for him. He interacted with nature, making him realise the interconnectedness of life. After his interactions with the fox and the rose, he reflected, ‘The essential is invisible to the eye’.”‘People where you live,’ the little prince said, ‘grow five thousand roses in one garden, … yet they don’t find what they are looking for.’ This was a space for growth and self-reflection for the Prince.

In The Little Prince, the other key themes are resilience and flexibility. Both the Little Prince and Santiago find themselves dealing with the harsh conditions of the desert; Santiago has to endure the Sahara’s difficulties while the Little Prince has to navigate some symbolic terrains, which shows their strength in the face of challenges. The challenges I have come across have been a platform for me to discover myself better. The deserts in the literature are similar to the ones in real life as they are tests for one to grow, discover themselves and be transformed.

In both, the desert operates as a compelling metaphor for a spiritual journey. The vast, arid landscapes symbolise the inner terrain of the characters’ souls, where they grapple with existential questions and seek more profound understanding. Santiago’s pilgrimage across the Sahara and the Little Prince’s encounters within symbolic deserts illustrate the characters’ quests for spiritual enlightenment. Amidst the barren expanses, they learn profound lessons about purpose, interconnectedness, and the intangible aspects of life. As a metaphor, the desert becomes a transformative space for spiritual exploration, echoing the universal theme that self-discovery is an integral part of the human journey.

The desert in “The Alchemist” and “The Little Prince” also serves as a spiritual journey. The landscapes and terrains are a symbol of the inner souls of the characters.  Santiago references the heart, “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.” It was a space for spiritual exploration where he got enlightnement in the middle of a desolate land. They both learn how everything is connected and discover their purpose as well as the critical aspect of life that is intangible. The Little Prince makes us see how the soul can see through the heart, “And now here is my secret, a straightforward secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;

My personal experiences resonate with the theme in “The Alchemist” and Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince,”. Figuratively and literally, as the desert is a metaphor for life’s challenges, personal growth and self-discovery – these aspects have shaped my life as I grow to know myself better and the world around me. In “ The Alchemist, the desert also symbolises the journey to fulfil one’s personal legend. The protagonist embarks on a physical and spiritual journey in the Sahara. The challenges he faces, given the conditions, have made me appreciate that difficulties are not hindrances but a means to an end.

In summation, the theme of the desert in “The Alchemist” and “The Little Prince” has gone a long way in helping me understand myself and the world. The novels have given me a template for understanding my life’s challenges better and clearly interpreting phases of my journey toward self-discovery and fulfilment. In literal encounters with desolate landscapes and metaphorical persona challenges, the desert remains a profound metaphor for resilience, adaptation, and the transformative power of the human spirit.
